Kindle Accessibility Plugin

Re: Kindle for PC with accessibility plugin problem « Reply #2 on: May 11, 2013, 07:12:42 am » I, mainly, wanted to see if i can get higher contrast with this plugin, because with dark background the text is not enough bright even if the brightness scale is set to maximum. You can use VoiceView with current e-reader models (Paperwhite 4, Oasis 2 and Kindle 8) when you connect to a Bluetooth audio device (like headphones). Step 1 Turn on your Bluetooth device and set it to pairing mode. Step 2 On your Kindle, navigate to ' Settings ', ' Accessibility ' and then ' VoiceView Screen Reader '. The Kindle Audio Adapter activates VoiceView on the Kindle Paperwhite E-reader when plugged into the Micro-USB port. Just plug your headphones or speakers into the audio jack on the Kindle Audio Adapter to use your e-reader with an audio interface.

Hooray for Kindle for PC App with Accessibility Plugin! Good News for Blind and Visually Impaired

While I gave kudos to Amazon.com for their free Kindle Apps, a large segment of the population has not been able to read Kindle books because of low or no vision.

Maybe Amazon heard me whining that I have the free Kindle App for PC but can’t actually read Kindle books.

Step 1, Find your Kindle's charger cable. The cable that came with your Kindle is the cable you'll use to charge it.Step 2, Find the USB end of the charger cable. The USB end is the larger side of the cable, and resembles a rectangular connector. The other end of the cable—that is, the smaller side—is referred to as a 'microUSB' connector, and it is oval in shape.Step 3, Plug the USB end into a computer's USB port. The USB end of the cable should plug into one of the rectangular ports on. Step 1, Connect the Kindle Fire to your computer with a micro-USB cable.Step 2, Unlock your Kindle Fire. You can do this by sliding the arrow on the touch screen from right to left.Step 3, Wait for your Windows computer to recognize the Kindle Fire. A pop-up window will display providing you with options for managing the Kindle device.

Amazon has issued a few updates to their Kindle for PC program for Windows computers this year to add some additional accessibility features, among other things.

Kindle for PC can now be used to read ebooks aloud using text-to-speech, and it also supports screen reader programs for additional navigation and voiceover features.

The latest Kindle for PC version 1.20.1 supports both JAWS screen reader and NVDA screen reader.

You can download the NVDA screen reader for free, with the option to donate.

Here’s the link to the Kindle for PC section of the NVDA user guide for more details about how it works.

All Kindle ebook product pages have a section labeled “Product details” that says if the book supports text-to-speech and screen readers.

Not all ebooks support TTS and screen readers but a good share of them do.

Over at Amazon’s help section there’s this list of keyboard shortcuts when using Kindle for PC. First you have to turn on TTS from the tools menu (or hit Control T) to use these text-to-speech shortcuts:

Using Text-to-Speech

To use these shortcuts, you must enable Text-to-Speech first. Press “Ctrl,T” or select the Tools menu and chose Start Text-to-Speech.
